I wish to share with President/Professor Roberts a passage from Hume’s “An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals” that is very similar to his favorite Adam Smith insight regarding man’s natural desire to be lovely, specifically, from Section 2: On Benevolence; second sentence of the third paragraph:
“It must indeed be confessed, that by doing good only, can a man truly enjoy the advantages of being eminent.”
(while I imagine he’s come across it before, I thought it may have been quite some time and that he would appreciate a reminder of its presence and similarity to his contemporary’s thought. I’m first reading this book presently and it struck me how similar it is; I wonder if one influenced the other with this insight.)
